Is Black negative or positive in perception? In fashion everyone always seeks to create the new black - black is equivalent with the on-going classic, the eternal fashion hit - yet in our language we often use Black as synonym for the negative in view.
Historically when a day is called black it means something tragic has happened. Fortunately this is not always the case: “Black Friday” in the US is the name of the biggest shopping day of the year – the day after Thanksgiving when Christmas shopping begins.
These days with a financial crises hanging over our heads people in the fashion industry are thinking pessimisticly about the future; feeling and fearing the effect of the crises to hit in. But how bad does it really have to be? What if the media hadn’t filled all of us, consumers, with fear of spending? Would we then have stopped the wheels from turning? Many of us actually still get paid the same wages as we did this summer, and our expenses properly haven’t changes much, yet we act as if we all went bankrupt. And maybe therefore we will.
Economy is also psychology, just as our view on things often will determine our perception and affect the outcome.
So let’s all use this moment to turn our mindset around, to shed a bright and positive view on the darkness of our time and situation. One the great “black news” from last week was the election of the first black American president. Another great piece of news is that green really is the new black – i.e. that the focus in many industries these days is still on creating new sustainable and green solutions to environmental issues. And in fashion the great news is that black is still the new black – not because the media thinks designers are creating black design in the name of recession but because black always have been and always will be stylish, classic and a great choice for any occasion.
I for sure will try to defeat the negative mindset of the time and keep and open heart and mind for all new good Black things to come. So I ask again: Is Black negative or positive?
