Belgian designer and creative director of Jil Sander, Raf Simons has teamed up with sporty British brand Fred Perry in a unique collaboration, designing a special two season only collection, the first to be in shops for SS09 and the second and last collection for AW09.
The collaboration with Raf Simons is a replacement for Fred Perrys previous work with Comme des Garcons, as the Birtish label found Raf Simons design to be very much tied into subcultures, music, graphic art and youth. Apart from a shot of color on the classic Fred Perry Laurel leaf, the first collection designed by Raf Simons were mainly black. His main focus in both collections were to reinterpret the well known Leaf from 1960s into new items that are characteristically Raf Simons, with focus on cut, fabric and texture. The new interpretation continues in the Autumn/Winter 2009 collection as the embroidered laurel is enlarged and moved to the center of the classic Fred Perry polo shirt printed with a metallic surface. The imagery for the collection are dark and mysterious with black and white grainy shots adding a new contemporary branding to the classic Fred Perry label.
