Chanel No. 5 - Inevitable

Is this the inevitable end? Rumors have it, that the classic perfume, Chanel No. 5 is going out of production. Is this truly to be believed? Nevertheless, even as a rumor, it’s shocking.

Imagine a world without Chanel No. 5. Personally, I can’t remember a time where I didn’t know of Chanel No. 5, it has been around for ages.

The scent was first launched in 1921, and was created by Coco Chanel, in collaboration with the perfumier, Ernest Beaux. The scent, in its clean rectangular bottle, has since become iconic for the Chanel label. According to the Chanel legend, Coco Chanel was offered 5 samples for the perfume, wherefrom she chose sample number 5, and kept the name, thus creating Chanel No. 5. The number was also Coco Chanel’s favorite number.

On the Chanel webpage; INSIDE Chanel, the scent is getting an atypical amount of attention. Here you’re told the story of Chanel No. 5 in a historical view, and presented with No. 5’s shared publicity with Marilyn Monroe. Who hasn’t heard the famous quote; were Monroe says all she wears to bed, is a few drops of Chanel No. 5.

The Chanel house also has a new promotional film for No. 5, called “Inevitable”. This film features a very cryptic Brad Pitt, who, very philosophically, talks about how everything has an end. But without being clear whether this is the end for Chanel No. 5.

On the Chanel facebook site, it’s all about either, the little black jacket, or about Chanel No. 5. Maybe all this promotion is a farewell tour for Chanel No. 5, or maybe it’s all just a PR-stunt. But let us not forget, that rumors have been wrong before, just as often as they have been right.

What we can establish for certain, is that Chanel No. 5 have been enjoyed by countless fashionistas around the globe, in the 91 years it has existed, and if this is the end, Chanel No. 5 will be grieved for, and deeply missed.
