Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid, born July 25, 1955, Somali-American supermodel, married to David Bowie.
Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Iman is the daughter of Marion and Mohamed Abdulmajid, a former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia. She is a Muslim and has two brothers, Elias and Feisal, and a sister, Nadia. Her cousin is Waris Dirie, a Somali supermodel and UN advocate. Iman attended high school in Egypt and later lived in Kenya, where her parents still reside. Fluent in five languages (Arabic, English, French, Italian, and Somali), she studied political science at the University of Nairobi.
Iman's first modeling assignment was for Vouge in 1976. She became an instant succes and the muse for fashion designers such as Yves st. Laurent, Versace, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Photographer Helmut Newton.
In 2006 she became the ambassador for KEEP A CHILD ALIVE(.org) that helps children with AIDS and provides them with the lifesaving ARV drug.
Today she runs her own cosmetic line, simply named Iman.
