Lillian Bassman i one of the foremost creative photographers of the 20th century. In her work the sharp contours dissolve and appear to be painted with a brush.
"Her work has a magical quality. In the history of photography she alone has been able to visually capture this breathless moment between the appearance of things and their disappearance", said Lillian Bassman's friend, the great artist Richard Avedon.
A retrospective exhibition at the Hamburg Deichtorhallen House of Photography has just ended. It was showing the work of Lillian Bassman and her long time husband Paul Himmel. The couple were established at the New York avantgarde artistic scene in the 50's and although she lost her husband in 2009 Lillian Bassman is still an active photographer. After a periode of teaching at the Parson's school of Design, she took up fashion photograhy in the middle of the 90's and worked for clients such as John Galliano, German Vogue, the New York Times and others. Her work is shown and honoured in various individual and group exhibitions.
