Castelbajac succumbs to simple black powers

The avantgarde and colorful french designer Jean Charles de Castelbajac, has shown surprisingly low-key pieces for AW13. The collection holds several fantastic black items and some noteworthy little...

The collection is not the usual campy costumes the Castelbajac label is known for. Instead the collection holds the essence of black; a seemingly effortless elegance, which is light and suitable for almost any occasion. The style is very laid back, even with wool blankets as a reoccurring material. Another theme of the collection seems to be elegance, a clear English elegance, revealed by the collections creamy charm, not to mention the name “The fox lady” and the items would all look good at a English country estate or possibly on a fox hunt on horseback, it is clear to see Castelbajacs noble heritage. Elegant and luxurious, french, black fashion wear is needed after several boring years of credit crunch and what-else-have-we. Summer is knocking, but this collection makes you await fall.

Maria Black

Jewelry designer Maria Black's AW13 collection is full of big, black and beautiful statement jewelry.

The pieces are made of oxidized silver and as usual Maria Black combines contemporary fashion trends with old school craftsmanship and commitment to precious materials. The result is fashionable pieces that looks like showpieces (and some her pieces were used as showpieces for the Anne Sofie Madsen show) but has a high quality that bears being worn.
Maria Blacks pieces has in the past at times been subtle and, well, simple, but for this upcoming autumn and winter she is going big. Worthy to note is the black two-fingered ring “chaos” featured in the picture. These pieces is the essence of jewelry, precious, unpractical and purely for show.

Bible Black

Fashion is a dark religion
Bible Black is a documentary on the come back of Andrew Mackenzie and takes focus on the intense and up building pressure leading up to his show in Milan.

After the movie premiered in 2011 at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and received good reviews, the film was shelved and not released to the public due to a legal battle between the directer Tao Noerager and the company of Andrew Mackenzie and not Mackenzie personally. This legal battle was put on by the company, wanting to make money from the movie, even though that was not the original terms before or during production of the film.

All this post production drama is ironically very suitable to the film, which is a raw look and all the blemishes in the fashion industry. Bible Black breaks the facade of fashion captures the stress of an ever changing, high pace industry, not to mention the gossip and bitchy attitudes.

This film has gone beyond depicting fashion in a refreshingly honest view and has gone beyond to be a symbol of the attitudes hiding in fashion; drama, self proclaimed entitlement and is exclusive that you cant get your hands on it.

Personally, I think the hole thing is delicious, film and the drama behind it. I take my black hat of to both the talented director Tao Noerager and to wishful lawyers working at Andrew Mackenzie. But what what would the fashion industry be, without a little drama.

Elle Style Award - Danish stylist of the year

Nominee Alexandra Carl always had a way with black.

Alexandra Carl, danish model and stylist, is nominated as stylist of the year by danish Elle, and that is not without cause, which I know because I've personally been lucky enough to work with her on some of her projects her in Denmark.
Currently she is studying in London where she also works as a fashion editor for RIKA magazine, but she still manages to do projects in Denmark. I caught an interview with this bizzy young professional to hear about her feelings about the nomination and her hopes for the future to come.

What does it mean to you to be nominated for an Elle style award?
To be nominated at this fairly early stage of my career is a huge honor. An award is for me a sign of people appreciating your work and contribution which is for me the greatest reward. Also I'm quite proud to be amongst people whose work I really respect and admire !

You started very young, has that effected you in any way, good/bad?

I guess starting out really early (just turning 17) was a challenge cause people will at some point find it hard not to judge you on your age in stead of looking at your work. Of course i also had to learn lots of styling tips and skills which working at Stylecounsel definitely helped me towards. of course when you're young you might be more likely to make mistakes - but i don't think that changes much as you get older. I never really assisted so I guess some things I've learned the "hard" way
Being so young I think I was - and still am - really eager to learn and very observant of everything around me, which is definitely affecting my work and I still feel like I'm developing every day.!
None of this could have happened without support from lots of amazing people, my agency and my family. That means everything.
You're currently studying in the UK, do you plan to be based there after you graduate?
I love London so much and find the energy of the city incredibly inspiring. Beside that it is where RIKA magazine (where I'm fashion editor) is based so I also need to be around to take part of that. Having said that I'm also quite fascinated by New York and would love to give it a try in a few years when I'm more established in London for sure ! First I need to finish my BA in media and sociology.
If I'm not mistaken you started out as a model, and still do modeling, why did you initially diversify into styling?
My change from model to stylist happened quite suddenly when I was offered to style designer, and good friend, Karen Simonsen's first campaign and show. Short after I did my first editorial for DANSK and carried on working with Stylecounsel from then. Beside that I think I had an urge to participate in the creative process behind the beautiful images I got to be in. I wanted to develop ideas and tell stories. Create these beautiful dreamworlds that hopefully will inspire people..
Where do you find inspiration for your work?
I find inspiration in everything in the city. People who follow their own ways of living and dressing - plenty of those in London ! I think it's so important to be able to express yourself and living in a space which allows you to do so. Working at RIKA I'm very much inspired by strong female characters and their stories. To me that's the biggest inspiration at all times - not just for my work but also in life.
Aesthetically I'm very intrigued by the filmmaker Tarkovsky's Polaroids, Man ray's revolutionary photography and Guy Bourdin.
What do you associate with the word ”style”?
Simply effortlessness

What life do you dream of living?

Wow haha that's a big question.. I guess overall I'd love to live a life which allows me to travel and explore the world, constantly meeting new people and discovering new things which I am very fortunate to be doing so far!
Which way do you see your career going, do you plan to stay in styling, or is it a stepping stone for something else?
Working in this business it's quite difficult to plan anything - I hardly ever know what's happening a week ahead!
I hope to continue to grow and develop with my styling each day so lets see which adventures that's gonna take me on ...
The Elle style award 2013 is to be held on the 15th of may hosted by danish singer Pernille Rosendahl and danish radio host Adam Duvaa Hall. The other nominees for dansih stylist of the year is Sassie Baré and Dorothea Gundtoft. For more info on Alexandra and her work see her webpage; alxandracarl.dk.

Love affair

The creative director Hedi Slimane has a love affair with rock icons, now including the French electronic duo Daft Punk.

Daft Punk's collaboration with Hedi Slimane and the Saint Laurent Music Project started in October 2012, when whey were commissioned to creative the soundtrack for the inaugural Saint Laurent fashion show.
The campaign that already sees Marilyn Manson in the fold, celebrates Slimane's musician friends and muses and the Daft Punk guys are no different, having been dressed by the designer for years both at his former gig and now with Saint Laurent.
Lanvin loves black

We love what Alber Elbas is doing for SS13 and especially for AW13, both collections have plenty of little black numbers with a guarantied feeling of glamour.

The inspiration for the collections seems to be a tribute to the greatest fashion hits of the 20th century, which comes together beautifully even though the inspiration is so polytheistic. The SS13 collection is a mix of the 80's shoulder pads and power dressing, but combined with the chic of the 20's and the 60's spirit a la Andy Warhols factory. The entire collection is amazing with a spirit of both rebellion and the classic Lanvin fragility.
The AW13 collection has more elegance but is just as multifaceted as the SS13. The collection still has an 80's feel, but the main inspiration seems to be the 40's wartime, with gorgeous knee lengthened pencil skirts, paired with shoulder padded, figure fitted blazers and fur pieces. Yet there is also clear inspiration of Diors floral inspired New Look, a look that dominated the 50's and seen in the usage of wide swing skirts. The 50's feeling is complimented by a distinct 30's elegance recalling icons like Jeanne Harlow.
These two collections truly are polytheistic in terms of inspiration source, cuts and silhouettes, but the strict colour scheme creates a coherency, naturally we especially like the abundance of impressive black items. The collections are exquisite and the many different trends are reinterpreted and intertwine ingeniously.

James Lima has directed the campaign film to showcase Marc Jacobs' AW13 line for Louis Vuitton. The film is made by LOVE magazine and is a must-see if you like the novels of Emilie Zola and Honere de...

he film is very fragmented and shifts between scenes from the fashion world and scenes from the lustful street. There is a duality of reality shifting between scenes of the Vuitton show and the artistic scenes of fashion models exposing themselves and Jacobs' designs in dark alleys and the backseats of cars. All while the models are wearing bewitching messy black wigs, looking like silent movie star Asta Nielsen waking up in a dumpster.
It is unclear if Jacobs has any political message or if he simply has taken a fancy to the style of Paris sexual market.
Eastpak New Collab Catwalk

Usually fashion and utility a two different ends of product design, but it seems that the American label, Eastpak, is changing that with their project “New collab catwalk”.

The project is a collaboration between Eastpak and established fashion designers; like Kris van Assche and Raf Simons. Raf Simons designs for Eastpak were shown at Paris Fashion Week AW13.
Kris van Assches design for an Eastpak backpack for SS13, is also worth attention. The color scheme is very fashion; black, its design contradicts the standard backpack, this is not just for practicality, it is for show. Still it is a very functional bag, with an abundance of pockets, to store your basic equipments, and makes them easy to find. The shape of the pockets match the basic shape of the backpack, a very nice feature, that conveys that the bag is designed to please the eye. A backpack is in itself a curiosity in fashion, usually it is a short termed trend, discarded with time. But this unusual parring between fashion and everyday functionality could be the future tendency in industrious design. Not only will such collaboration profile both the fashion designers, and the more high street labels, it is democratizing the fashion industry. We have already seen this countless times with other labels like H&M's collaboration with high fashion labels. It is also seen in the increasing interest in CSR. Fashion is expanding to the common man, not through plagiarism, but in collaboration with contrary companies.
